[Closed] Fei Zhou (Restoran Famous Congee)

Fei Zhou, when translated from the chinese characters means "Flying Porridge" and the way it is pronounced, rhymes with Africa. It is just a stone throw away from the popular Sutera Mall that most of us has been visiting.

Fei Zhou
Interior was modern with recommended and signature dishes pictures on the wall. Premises is air-conditioned and fixed with ceiling fans to cool the temperature in the restaurant.

Environment

Beverages
We started with some sides while waiting for the porridge and rice. Abalone mushrooms were deep fried and with its spicy soury dipped, I found that this is something special and not yet found in Singapore so far.

Deep Fried Mushroom - RM 10.80
Dont miss out famous dish like the Braised Pork with Preserved Vegetables to complement with your porridge dishes. The pork were braised till tender together with garlic gloves and preserved vegetables.

Braised Pork with Preserved Vegetable - RM 15.80
With hints of peppery taste among the fragrant fried rice, these air flown salmon was cut into dices and topped the rice. Impressed by the bright orange presentation among the white, yellow and green ingredients in the rice, the taste was relatively above average. A little peeve is that the Salmon may be more on the fishy side.

Air Flown Salmon Fried Rice - RM 18.80
Every pot of congee is served in the earthen claypot with a base wrapped with aluminium. The congee's depth of flavour come from the long hours of cooking the broth and rice grains were slowly cook to the texture. To enhance the flavours, spring onions as well as fried onions were added.

Sliced Fish Congee - RM 13.80 Sea Bass
Mix the garnishing well. The pot of minced pork & century Egg Congee was savoury with generous amount of Minced pork and egg given.

Minced Pork & Century Egg Congee - RM 7.20
My bowl of congee won't be completed without these little fried fritters in it. If you are like me, mixed some of these into the porridge and enjoy the bites.

Fried Fritters
Break the egg yolk and stir the fried fritters into the porridge.

Congee
It was a pleasant experience to have enjoy pots of porridge and kinds of dishes by Fei Zhou. I don't mind popping by once in a while for simple food like this.

Tenderbest

Lauded for its freshly fried chicken, I'm very sure that majority of us are no stranger to this popular brand "Tenderfresh".

Tenderfresh
Community Centre nowadays is getting more interesting with shop F & B like this. The opening of Tenderbest not only brings more crowd to the centre but have also given residents nearby another option for food besides the recent launch of KEK that is some walking distance away. Tenderbest is Halal Certified and Muslim pals are welcome to dine in too.

Tenderfresh
Interior is simple and semi industrial themes with basic furnishings.

Suitable for Groups
There are long tables that are suitable for groups. The place is quite quiet and if you want to avoid the massive lunch crowd during weekdays, Tenderbest here serve up another good place for your lunch gathering.

Cosy Corner
Drinks are served upon ordering, however for food wise, we are given a buzzer and to return to the counter once the food its ready.

Bandung & Lime Juice - $1.90 Each
I'm as surprised as you when I learnt that Cheng Tng is available on the menu too. Catering to the style of the local, this drink serves its role in reducing the "heat" in our body system after the fried food we intake.

Cheng Tng - $3.30
Have you ever heard of spaghetti but in the form of Laksa? Here you go! Order this Western and Local Fusion from their menu and rate it.

Laksa Prawn Spaghetti - $8.50
Another fusion in the menu will be the Mee Goreng with Fried Cirspy Chicken. The plumply battered fritters was attention luring and I would have thought it was a battered fish as this is commonly seen in Fish & Chips dishes. I'm not very used to the style of having spaghetti fried and prepared to our local taste, thus I will prefer the original Mee Goreng.

Mee Goreng with Fried Crispy Chicken - $9.90
Chicken Chop can be served in 2 kinds of gravy, either the Brown Sauce or Black Pepper sauce. The slab of meat was fried to crispy brown on its skin and texture was perfect for me. The dish really lives up to its name with its tender chicken. Sides like fries were generously given with fragrant garlic toast and coleslaw.

Chicken Chop with Brown Sauce - $7.50

Chicken Chop with Black Pepper Sauce - $7.50

Another permutation in their Chicken dish will be its Crispy Chicken Cutlet with breaded crumbs on its outside. While the sides of the dish were similar to the chicken chop, the notable part will be the sweet tasting sauce that gives a good pairing to the deliciously fried chicken cutlet.

Crispy Cutlet with Mustard Sauce - $7.90

Crispy Tender Cutlet
Carbs lover who prefer rice to fries may try out their Fragrant Chicken Rice special which is also a signature dish of theirs. Look at the glossy even looking from the outer side of the spring chicken, it would have whip your appetite for more.

Roasted Half Spring Chicken Rice - $7.90
The Salted Egg chicken wings supposed to be the trendiest dish among the rest. However it was quite a disappointment for its salted taste did not really stand up.

Salted Egg Chicken Wings - $8.90 (6 Pcs)
Sambal Chilli was given on the plate of Aglio Olio with grilled Tilapia. Since Tenderbest is known of its chicken, you may want to give this a miss especially if you can not take the natural fish smell here.

Grilled Tilapia Aglio Olio - $8.90
For those who enjoy cabonara in cream will probably like this. Chunks of mushrooms were given and mixed with chicken dices in the midst of the cream sauce as well as herbs.

Chicken Mushroom & Pesto - $7.90
It's kind of fusion here I thought with chinese vegetables among the pasta. Nevertheless, the dish is still quite special among the rest of the menu item with smoke duck dices in it.

Smoked Duck Penne with Thai Sauce - $7.50
Overall, since we are no stranger to the Brand's name, I would say that the standard over here has keep up its name.

Ming Chung Restaurant

Ming Chung Restaurant is one of the oldest eating place that sell authentic Heng Hua Cuisine. Many have not heard of Henghua food but if you all are aware of PUTIEN, the popular chinese restaurant with number of branches here in Singapore, that's the kind of cuisine Ming Chung are selling.

Ming Chung Restaurant
I came to know of Henghua cuisine from my mum whom dialect is that and once in a while she will cook my favourite Henghua Bee Hoon. Henghua is a minority Chinese dialect of the immigrants from Putian in Fujian province. Since Putien is located near the coast, Henghua cuisine features most of their ingredients items like seaweed, clams, oysters etc.

Bringing mum to her own dialect cuisine can be a little bit tricky at times as she do cooks some similar dishes. Nevertheless, we managed to order the deep-fried crispy Mackerel fish that was marinated with their special soy sauce.

Fried Batang Fish - $10 (Small)
These deep fried chicken wings were well marinated with prawn paste and served with their special kind of chilli. Tasty but not the best I had so far.

Prawn Paste Fried Chicken - $10 (Small)
Fried Peh Kueh is similar to the fried Nian Gao or Rice cake that we had from the chinese restaurant. Dish was fragrant and came in dark soya sauce with ingredients like prawns, sotong, clams, pork and vegetables.

Fried Peh Kueh - $7
I have never heard of Cha Hoon and since my mum recommend it, we had ordered this dish for sharing. Its actually a combination of Henghua's Bee Hoon and Mee Sua braised in a white broth with ingredients such as sotong, prawns, pork, bean curd and vegetables. I like the texture of Henghua's Bee Hoon as they are much finer compared to the usual bee hoon we have.

Cha Hoon - $7 (Small)
Henghua Lor Mee is a must have among the regulars. Thick noodles in white tasty broth is usually known as White Lor Mee or Rickshaw Noodles, these handmade noodles were wok braised with hearty ingredients like that Cha Hoon and Peh Kuah dishes.

Lor Mee (Braised Noodle) - $8 (Big)
I'm pretty impress by the level of service as they were patient for our orders even though we took quite sometime to decide. Upon ordering, there was also not much of waiting time and food were dished out pretty fast. Overall, it served a very good place for those who prefer authentic Henghua Cuisine and give a very good reminiscent to the earlier generations as Ming Chung has been very reputable since the earlier days.

Baba Melaka

Passing by the coffee shop, the outstanding color of the signage had caught my sight and was surprised that Nonya / Peranakan Food is available in Coffeeshop? I went closer and took a look, making a quick decision that it should be my dinner. The stall amaze me not only for its cuisine but it also search desserts item like Baba Chendol as well as the kuehs. Kuehs are placed on banana leaf in a display cabinet instead of plastic boxes, which is quite an unusual sight for me.

Baba Melaka
Nonya Mee Siam? The sweet and sour broth with Bee Hoon was appetizing. Served with half a hard boiled egg, 2 prawns an toasted Tau Pok cut into little cubes. The powerful part of the dish is perhaps the chilli that spelt out the difference between the usual Muslim and Nonya taste.

Nonya Mee Siam - $3
Love how the presentation of rice dishes was served traditionally on the banana leaf with the basket. The rice was packed with coconut fragrance and chicken wings was freshly fried. Though it is not the best Nasi Lemak I ever had but it has its style of its own with achar, hard boiled egg and Nasi Lemak's chilli sauce.

Pak Cik Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng - $4.90
Talking about Buah Keluah as an ingredient in Peranakan Dish, I quite excited to see Ayam Buah Keluah with Steam rice on their menu. Given a chicken drumstick with robust gravy covering up the entire stick, paired with sides like achar, crunchy peanuts with ikan billis and the fiery kick of its chilli sauce. The chicken meat was tender till falling off the bone, recommended if you have not try something like that from a coffeeshop.

Famous Ayam Buah Keluah with Steam Rice - $5.50
Ayam Buah Keluah
Rounding up the meal, we shared a bowl of icy cold Chendol. It wasn't too sweet but was quite a let down as it did not give me any reminiscent of Melaka Chendol that I had back in Malecca. It was diluted and lacked the taste of the usual Chendol.

Baba Chendol - $2

Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak

"Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak", say this to any Westie and I bet she is no stranger. The stalls operate during night time daily to after midnight and even if hunger pangs in the night, be sure that you get to enjoy plate or packet of fragrant Nasi Lemak. The stall is easy to spot as they are located at corner end of the row and usually with long queue lining up - its hard to be missed.

Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak
Rice are as fragrant and you can select your choice of ingredient if you do not want to take up their assigned set with standard ingredient. I had my usual items like bagedil, sunny side up egg, Otah and chicken wing.

Yummy Chicken Wing
Fried Chicken wing still as good! Its golden brown perfection color and crispiness is good enough! And I bet you can't leave the place without having one of them on your plate.

Fried Chicken Wing
For those who have tried before, many would have commented that the standard had dropped. I would not deny that as it used to be very good but right now, its still above the average standard and the better ones in the west. However, be patient as you might need to join the long snaky queue at night!

Fei Fei Wanton Mee

Talking about Wanton Mee, Fei Fei Wanton Mee is probably one of the top few Wanton Mee chains that will come across your mind when we talk about Wanton Noodles in Singapore. With its branches, though its available in the West, we still find it best to visit its pioneer's branch.

Having ordered the fried meat ball as a side. I find that this is rather addictive and special. Minced meat has been mixed with chinese parsley, onions and chopped carrots. If you like meatballs and dont mind chinese parsley, this is a good finger food option.

Fried Meat Balls  - $5
While many have feedback that their standard of food quality had dropped, I find that their noodles still stand up. With a spoonful of chilli sitting by the side of those pale noodles, the first thing that came into my mind was its spicy level.

Noodles and Chilli - $5 (Big)
Tossing the mee with the spoonful of chilli, you will realize that the ingredients are all hidden under the noodles, with lean slices of Char Siew meat reveal and wanton. Not to worry about having dry noodles as the pork lard oil and soy sauce had given a smooth consistency to the noodles.

Mixing Chilli
For non-spicy lovers, you can opt for your spoonful of black sauce for your noodles. Likewise the ingredients were all under the pile of noodles.

Noodle with Black Sauce - $5 (Big)
Shrimp dumplings soup was nothing out of the ordinary and it would not give you the temptation to make a return visit for it.

Drumpling Soup - $5
No doubt its exterior is soft and smooth, filled with minced meat and shrimps, it still lacked the ommph and crunchy bites from chestnut. Still not the best I have eaten so far.

Individual Dumpling
After paying this famous Wanton Mee place, I find that it's nothing much as I still personally prefer's Pontian's to this!

Nam Seng

All I know about China Street is the Hock Lam Beef Noodle and Far East Square. I haven't heard of Nam Seng until I was told that this is the stall that my buddy always wanted to visit but he could not match the operating hours.

The noodle may look unappealing, plain and not appetizing but do not judge a book by its cover. In fact the noodle was springy, chewy and won't lump together among the light soy sauce. Simple yet flavourful. Wantons on the other hand had its unique style in the usual ingredients but the soup is not the usual ones we had from Hawker Centres. Yes, its peppery and kind of having some prawns flavour in it.

Wanton Mee - $5 (Big)
I prefer those red velvety colored Char Siew (BBQ Pork) slices but on a second thought the meat here looks clearer and lean.

Ingredients
The instant satisfaction that it had given me was a surprise. I had never imagined that a dumpling was filled with generous amount of ingredients especially the little dices of chestnuts that gave the crunch in the bites. Prawns and minced meat with marinates sum up the yummy pieces of dumpling soup we ordered.

With the old granny around, I learnt that the stall has a long history behind. The style of Wanton Mee is seen appreciated by lots of them in the previous generation. If you are looking to reminisce the old school days of Wanton Mee, Nam Seng is definitely a good choice.
