Balmoral Bakery

Balmoral Bakery is one of the old school bakeries that we look upon to as every visit here bring us good flashbacks to our younger times when having such simple stuff on earth makes our day. In the current environment that we are in, it is less often that we will come across such down to earth design of the cakes.

Balmoral Bakery
With many bakeries keeping up with the modern equipment and modern look in their shop, this facade of the Balmoral bakery remains humble with red bricks by the side of the walls. Walking into the shop is like a walking back into the past with the time machine.

Box
Made up of Multi layers crispy "biscuits" with the top as chocolate and icing. In its buttery fragrance and the flaky thin layers, one tends to get addicted over it.

Napoleon
The nostalgic feeling when you saw the blueberry puree topped the cake with a cream layer in between. To be frank, I was never a fan of blueberry cake when I was young as many of my birthday cakes were all covered with similar blueberries. However, it brought back a lot of good memories with cake having a old school taste!

Blueberry Cake
The traditional flavour that I love most is perhaps this Swiss roll that topped with peanut chunks and sugar. I always find this special somehow as compared to the usual Swiss Rolls cradling the creams.

Peanut Roll
There are quite a few flavours of Swiss Roll to choose from like Pandan, Vanilla and Chocolate. These little Swiss Rolls were being shrink wrapped and placed in the chiller to maintain the moist. We had the most basic flavour of all.

Vanilla Swiss Roll

Besides selling cakes, they have pastries like Beef and chicken pie. I will be back again for other items.

Fei Zai Fried Kway Teow

Fei Zai Fried Kway Teow is a relatively new stall in the S11 Coffeeshop right next to Bukit's Batok Interchange. This stall has been featured in the Singapore Food Map and has received award.

Fried Kway Teow Stall
Beside Char Kway Teow, this stall sells other popular Singapore delights like Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle and Carrot Cake.

Fried Kway Teow - $3.50
Char Kway Teow is moist, smooth and sweet with adequate amount of black sauce coated on it. It has generous amount of bean sprouts and smell of wok flavour. Even though the portion is of right size to the price that I'm paying for, such delicacy is still addictive and leave me wanting for more when I have cleared the plate.

Yummy!
Food is cook upon order, thus ensure the freshness and heat on these scrumptious delights.

Wong Kee Wanton Noodle & Roasted Delights

After walking 6 rounds in Timbre+, I finally found a seat right along the passage ways of Wong Kee Wanton Noodle Queue. The seat was not really ideal as anyone who walks pass by will either rub against or hit my back.

Apparently, this is one of the longest queues we have seen. We joined the long queue with about 10 pax ahead of us and I literally calculated that it took them about 5 minutes to serve a customer.

Wong kee Wanton Noodle & Roasted Delights
Spinach Noodle with beef brisket is one of their signatures served in slightly green flat noodles. They were smooth but didn't have much of spinach flavour as usual when compared to the usual standard ones we had outside. Though the beef brisket was succulent and braised to its softness, I could not enjoy much as I felt that it was rather gamey.

Beef Brisket Spinach Noodle with - $5.50
Tomato noodle? What's that? Beats me as I have never seen anything like this before but this is also one of the popular dishes ordered by patrons who walked pass me. The fried and boiled wantons were placed together on the plate as the stall had ran out of soup. Instead of tossing the noodles with the usual sauces, they were replaced by tomato with common wantons mee ingredients like char siew and vegetables. Talking about that, beside having noodles already processed with tomato flavours, the sauce comes with the real tomato. The noodles, as a whole were a little dry and too tangy for my liking, also I find them quite salty.

Tomato Noodle Wanton Mee - $4.50
Since Timbre+ is still in its novelty stage and with news media advertising, the crowd coming in was literally non-stop. Finding of seating can be a frustration, as a whole, with such a scotching weather, the place not only needs more coolers but also requires more ventilation.

Toby's The Dessert Asylum

Toby's Estate has come to the West! Cheers to those who are residing or working in the vicinity.Toby's The Dessert Asylum is located in TradeHub 21 just directly on the right of the carpark entrance, thus there is no excuse of missing the unit.

Toby's
The Spicy Hot Wings was a modified version as we requested to have it done without spiciness for the kid, therefore the chilli was separated out. Fried to golden brown perfection, these chicken wings were not too bad as an appetizer.

Spicy Hot Wings - $8.90
Texture of spaghetti was cooked to our expectations with amount of spicy tomato sauce consistently covering up the pasta. Ingredients of the dish includes green mussels, prawns and calamari.

Spicy Marinara Spaghetti - $17.90
The thin crust pizza was nicely done up with shitake mushrooms drizzled with sweet savoury Hosin Sauce and generous amount of crispy spring roll. The amount of crispy spring roll on the pizza reminds me of the crackers we have from the Crackers on top of the Yu Sheng we had.

Smoked Duck Pizza - $16.90
As much as I like Smoked Duck Pizza, the duck was kind of dry and lacking of flavours. Other than that, it will be perfect if the base of the pizza is thinner.

Yummy!
Under the Batter and Biscuits, we ordered the recommended Waffles that come with a choice of ice cream and a choice of fresh fruits. We chose macadamia out of strawberry, mocha almond, double chocolate, rum and rasins and vanilla while we have strawberries out of banana or apple. We only came to realize that the waffles machine was not working normally when we feedback that the waffles tasted abit beyond expectations. Nevermind about that, we will be back for this!

Wacky Waffles - $13.90
Service was friendly and most importantly the place was child friendly, suitable for meet up session with my friend. They have attractive promotional items on the weekdays menu and if you are looking for a not so crowded place to dine during a weekday night, Toby Estate is a good place to enjoy your dinner or desserts.

Oven Marvel

If you are in Sunshine Plaza and are wondering where did the buttery fragrance came from, guess no more. This alluring fragrance that causes perhaps anyone who are in Sunshine Plaza to be hungry is located among the cluster where Victor's Kitchen, Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee and Teng's Bespoke Japanese Vegetarian Dining is.

Oven Marvel is mostly for take away orders, however if you are keen in dining on the spot they do have a table or 2 for you to sit and fix your instant cravings.

Shop Front
Pies are freshly baked daily and in fact I was lucky to grab some which just came out of the oven. Each box was spread out with oil paper before placing the pastries into them.

One of the box
A homely taste of curry puff is what I'm taking away with. Most of the curry puff I had either taste mediocre or were too greasy too handle. The even tone of the puff and its dedicate crust was its highlights with good texture and wasn't too heavy.

Curry Puff - $2.80
You won't feel shortchange for they are so generous with potatoes in the puff's fillings and best still the curry taste isn't weak!

Curry Puff Fillings
Eat while the pie is hot! The golden brown hue of the pie with flaking yummy curves had defeated me in terms of its food aesthetic, not mentioning the whiff of pastry aroma I had earlier on.

Chicken Pie - $3.80
Fillings are peppery, creamy with generous chunks of chicken as well as softened potatoes among the mixed vegetables. Pies are filling but it just did not stop me from wanting more. I like about the part where pastry were flaky and soft, yet not overly greasy.

Chicken Pie Fillings
The middle age lady who served me was friendly and asked the arrangement of my pies and puff to be packed. Adding on to our conversation, she highlighted that if we can't finish the food on the same day, put in the fridge and thaw it for about 10 -15 minutes at room temperature before reheating them again.

I hope to be back for their pastries as well as muffins.

Teng Bespoke Japanese Vegetarian Dining

Japanese Dining but in Vegetarian Style? Does it ring the bell? Teng Bespoke Japanese Vegetarian Dining gives us a different take on Japanese food in a healthier way serving quality and refreshing food.

Interior of Teng Bespoke Japanese Vegetarian Dining
If you look around, Teng Bespoke Japanese Vegetarian Dining occupies more than 1 unit space. Besides the main dining area, just look opposite of the unit and you will get to see a classy upscale dining area which is the overflow room of Teng's.

Overflow rooms
Kai Lan was blanched, cut and served in a stack. They were drench with roasted sesame sauce with a handful of sesame on its top to elevate the plain healthy vegetables. Simply love its crunchy and succulency in this starter!

Gai Lan Sesame Sauce - $5
Teriyaki Chicken on stick looked appetizing indeed served with english parsley and pinkish ginger strips. If you asked me about its taste, well, it takes abit to be greasy and glossy to convince me.

Teriyaki Chicken - $7
The Unagi Maki was something I had never expected and right at that moment, I had issues convincing myself I'm actually having vegetarian dishes. Mock Unagi tasted as though they were the actual with sweet black sauce lying on top of the little rice rice with cucumbers and avocados.

Unagi Maki - $15
Even at a closer look, they look as good as those in the real Japanese Restaurant.

Unagi at a closer look
Dishes were getting more interesting in this case with 3 kinds of Sashimi, mock tuna, salmon and sword fish. The presentation and food art was stunning, how did they make the "veins" on the fish look so real? Arrangement of food with wasabi on the bed of ice made no difference as what we have from a Sashimi Bar!

Three Kind Sashimi - $19
Texture was smooth and these mocked sashimi did give fellow vegetarians a very good indication of how actual sashimi taste like, lessing the natural "fishy" taste.

Another Side
The crispy and uniform cuts of the piece of deep fried meat looks none other than a slab of delicious Pork Tonkatsu pairing up with garden salad and its dressing. The texture and bite may resemble an actual pork fillet but the taste still could not hide the fact that its a piece of vegetarian product with hints of mushrooms and yam.

Pork Fillet - $11
Buckwheat Noodle with toufu skin and mushroom broth is delighting. Beside the smooth buckwheat noodle, fried tempura bits had given the dishes another level of texture in the dish.

Buckwheat Noodle
Last but not least, the grains! Fried Rice was unexpectedly scrumptious and every mouth came with a whiff of wok fire taste! Incredible! Grains were topped with brown sea vegetables (hijiki) and these vegetables are part of Japanese diet for centuries as they are rich in dietary fibre and minerals such as calcium, iron and magnesium. Who says only red meats give iron?

Hjiki Fried Rice - $9
Special thanks to my pal who insisted that I should give Teng Bespoke a try and it gave me another view point of having Japanese dining in a vegetarian way. One of the servers did mentioned that they have more than 1 overflow room and in fact Teng Bespoke is also serving Thai Vegetarian Food and perhaps this is why we see Lemon Grass Drink available in its menu.

Ice Lemon Grass Tea - $4

Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle

A recent visit to Boon Lay Village gave me a stunned with the presence of a couple of new stalls around and one of them was this Fried Hokkien Prawn noodle stall. There was already a few similar stalls around and with one reputable stall that I always patronize. Therefore, to whip up a good plate of fried hokkien prawn noodle there is the only thing to keep the business sustainable. With the FBI 好吃情报 indicated on their sign board, I was automatically attracted to buy a plate from there.

Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle Stall
Portion comes in $4 / 5 / 6 / 8 and we bought ourselves a $5 plate. From the number of patrons siting on the nearby tables staring at the stall, we knew that we are definitely not the first in the queue. Despite of the queue, our food was served rather quickly.

Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle was yummy and was delectable in the mixture of yellow and white noodles with prawns, squid and sweetness from the eggs.

Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle
Without any additional condiments, the plate of Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle was already good by itself. Perhaps the taste will be more interesting by adding more chilli and lime myself.
