Old World Bakuteh

With the power of social media, the dish "Fried Porridge" has brought the stall popularity among the estate. Old World Bakuteh may not be any stranger to Yishun Dwellers as they are just a stone throw away from the MRT station.

As the signage suggests, the stall is popular for its traditional flavoured Teochew style Pork Ribs soup and of course none other than their popular Fried Porridge.

After braving the long queue for more than half an hour, we finally got our items. The portion of porridge was big while the rest of the items were placed in smaller bowls.

Orders

Although being a Teochew, I do not really fancy having my own dialect group style of peppery Bak Kut Teh as I'm more bias towards the black herbal Hokkien Style of BKT. To be honest, at the price that we are paying for a bowl of spare ribs BKT Soup, it is value for money for the 4 slabs of ribs given are of quality and meaty.

Pork Ribs Soup 肉骨汤 - $6

Patrons can opt for rice, white Mee Sua or Fried See Sua at $0.50 to complement the mains that they have ordered. While Fried Mee Sua was not what we have usually seen on the menu, I find that it was a good choice for us among the 3 options. It was springy and tasted more like thinner "Ee Mee" and I'm totally addicted to this plain simple bowl of noodles. These Mee Sua are toasted in a mixture of Oyster and Soy Sauce, sprinkled with some green spring onions.

Fried Dried Mee Sua - $0.50

The sweet braised intestines were perfectly prepared. It was chewy and tasty in its every bite. It will be perfect to have the braised sauce together with a bowl of white rice.

Braised Sweet Intestine 卤粉肠 - $5

Just like the braised sweetness from the bowl of Intestine, I'm totally a fan of their style.

Braised Beancurd Stick 卤腐竹 - $1.50

The serving from the $5 bowl of porridge is generous. However the brown coloured Fried porridge is thick and kind of starchy, thus upon having half the bowl, my tummy gets filled up. The mixed pig organ's fried porridge stands up not only with its generous mixture of ingredients but also the cubes of fried pork lards that were added, giving flavours to it, not forgetting its every spoonful of Wok Hei Flavours too.

Mixed Pig's Organ Fried Porridge 猪杂炒粥 - $5

For the Sliced Pork Fried Porridge, the base porridge is the same while ingredients were differently added base on our order. Take a look at the fried pork lard that was thrown into the fried porridge mixture. It's well worth the calories but it may seem a tad oily for some.

I have not tried Fried Porridge after so long and I still think that such dish was pretty rare in Singapore. Though such an item is special, if you were to ask me if I will purposely make a special trip down again for it, I would most answer probably not as the queue had somehow horrified me.
