Union Chee Pow Kai [Moved]

Union Chee Pow Kai used to be set in a rustic place along Clementi Road. I can vividly remember the place as I was quite young then. Its setting was kind of kampong style, laidback and you will feel like you have traveled back into the 80s through a time machine. In fact, the feeling was more like in Malaysia than in an urban Singapore. However, with such environment, I will say that the ambiance is good. Sadly the piece of land was sold off by the landlord and Union Chee Pow Kai is currently located in a humble coffeeshop of Toh Guan Road.

Stall in Coffeeshop
With such limited kitchen space, the dishes was limited, with just only wrapped chicken, quail, cheese chicken balls and noodles / bee hoon. Their operations start at 12pm till sold out. We were there before 12pm and had already seen many people called in advance for take away order.

We ordered the minimum quantity of 5 pcs of wrapped chicken at $10. However the stall recommend 20 pieces for 2-3 diners, since we were there for trying, he recommended that we take the minimum order. If I do recall, the pieces of chicken was served in a bigger piece previously. No wonder he had advised to order more.

Paper Wrapped Chicken - $10
Each piece of chicken is marinated and wrapped in the paper for a few days. It was then dropped into the dryer upon our orders. It has to be well wrapped so that there will be no leakage to the marinate. Removing the wrappers were challenging as they were hot and it requires some "chopsticks" skills.
Chicken was tender and succulent, bursting of marinated flavors. The fragrance was seemingly familiar and reminds me of chinese Wine "Hua Tiao Jiu", Soya Sauce and ginger. You may want to try it with the chilli as it complemented them quite well.

Unwrapping the Chicken

Yummy
Best enjoyed with the plate of egg noodles. It was springy, spreaded with a good handful pieces of leafy greens on it.  I kind of find the taste familiar to my childhood.

Egg Noodle - $8 (Big)
Overall, we find that the cost of signature dish is on a high side and may not be returning so soon unless there are someone who crave for the dish.
