Teck Kee Chicken Rice

Craving for some Chinese dishes from the Rail Mall? How about a plate of delicious chicken rice from Teck Kee? If you are not really keen on the rice dishes, you can try out their noodles or porridge as well!

Teck Kee Chicken Rice
Interior dining was big and spacious, all filled with tables in the dining area but still leaving rooms for the walkways.

Dining Area

If you side near the walls, you can see that the condiments are all neatly arranged in the rack which was mounted to the wall.

Condiments
Even its menu is placed on the rack, which make it so convenient for the helpers.

Menu

A simple and interesting soup to pair along with our mains. Hot soups are meant for cool rainy day.
Soup was thick but taste was light and comes with crunchy healthy beansprouts, shredded chicken and slices of mushrooms.

Shredded Chicken Thick Soup - $6
If not for its Laksa Chicken Noodle that was recommended, I would have never enter a Chicken Rice Restaurant like this. The Laksa chicken  noodle had its unique taste whereby its base was thick and aromatic. The bowl of fragrant laksa was made up of Tau Pok and steamed white chicken.

Laksa Chicken Noodle - $4.50
I was carried away by the fragrance of their rice initially when it was being served up to our table. However to our dismay, it was not as fluffy even though the fragrance is there.

Chicken Rice Set

Their steamed white chicken was average, no stark different from those we have from the usual hawker stalls.

Steamed Chicken
Overall, Im quite impressed on the Laksa chicken noodle to its chicken rice. Thus, this makes a reason to patronise them again. Do note that take away service is available.

Hai Xian Tang

Another new stall spotted in Ayer Rajah Food Centre name, Hai Xian Tang. When translated from the chinese characters, it means Seafood soup. Manned by 2 uncle, 1 taking order while the other does the cooking. There are not much fanciful dishes unlike what most seafood soup stall has, Hai Xian Tang only offers 3 kinds of dishes, namely fried fish bee hoon soup, seafood soup with rice and braised pork trotters.

Stall front of Hai Xian Tang
With a standard menu, there are no other permutations for the fried fish noodle but just fried fish with rice vermicelli (Bee Hoon), patrons do not have the choice of thick Bee Hoon nor sliced fish to choose from. The Bee Hoon is bland as it may seen with just lettuce under the Bee hoon and tomatoes.

Fried Fish Soup - $3
Amount of fried fish given is far more generous, however it was a little salty even though I quite like its peppery saltish taste on its batter.

Fried Fish
It is less often I get to see such "unclear" soup from the seafood soup stall. Having observed the cooking process, the cook had the meat items (fish and minced pork) stirred fried within the pot initially before adding in the already cooked soup. This gave additional flavours to the meat and together with the prawns, they lends a seafood kind of sweetness in the soup.

Seafood soup with rice - $4
Look at the items, 2 prawns were included. The down side is that they were still in its shells.

What's in the Seafood Soup
Comparing both dishes, I would prefer seafood soup as it has a distinctive taste from its murky soup and quite special as compared to other seafood soup.

Having seen the 3rd item on the menu, braised pork trotters, it just tempts me further when i saw bowls of luscious and "yuummy-licious" fat braised trotters went pass my eyes. Alright, I will try that soon!

GT Yong Tau Foo (Closed)

It's been quite sometimes ever since we bidded good bye to the famous Hainanese Bean Sprouts Chicken Rice. The stall talking over is selling Yong Tau foo now, not the usual ones whereby we can choose the items on our own but their style was the "fixed" items kind.

GT Yong Tau Foo
Being a regular patron of Ayer Rajah Food Centre, often we tend to think for a long time to select our meals.

Having ordered the soup version, I find it was a straight forward meal as I do not need to spend sometime thinking which item to be picked up but just think if I want a soup or a dry version.

Yong Tau Foo Soup - $3.50
The soup version only comes with white vermicelli and it has a little Q texture with standard items like fishcake, Ngoh Hiong, fishball, toufu and tau pok added.

Close Up on Yong Tau Foo Soup
After understanding from the stall helper, the reason why there is no noodle in their Yong Tau Foo is because there were some hiccups during the the customization of their cooking area. There was no stove space for them to cook the noodles to the ideal texture. Nevertheless, I'm prefer Bee Hoon to other noodles, so it's not really a big issue to me.

Yong Tau Foo (Dry) - $3.50

Overall standard is acceptable though the soup maybe a little bland in taste. To think of that, perhaps this is one of the healthier choices available in the hawker center.

Xin En

En Xin, a stall located just next to stall of Hong Kong Street Jen Poh Kee selling vegetarian food. I'm always curious when it comes to vegetarian food as I felt that its rather interesting how normal meat dishes can turn exactly the same taste or if not the closest taste to the original ones.

En Xin
A normal sight of vegetarian stalls would consist of few side dishes to go with either bee hoon or rice. However what makes En Xin special is their variety of cook food like fried Carrot cake, roti prata, mee rebus, laksa etc. On top of that, there is a special dish whip up daily.

I took the opportunity to order their vegetarian style of Mee Siam. Though it may be a tad expensive than the usual Mee Siam, I would say that the price matches the portion given or exceeds my expectation. It was far more than what I had expected.

Vegetarian Mee Siam - $3.50
The taste of the Mee Siam Gravy was special, not spicy at all. Sweet and sour with a little bitter aftertaste. With the grated peanuts, Zhai Er, Tau Pok and bee hoon, it was close enough to the non-vegetarian ones.

Close up
In addition to my main, I had ordered their fried popiah at a dollar. It was not that oily and very cripsy on its skin. As for its fillings, it was rather average.

Fried Popiah - $1

I'm rather surprise as I was there on a 15th of the lunar Chinese calendar but there was no long queue at all. For most vegetarian stalls, the chance of getting into long queues is high when visiting them on the 1st or 15th of the lunar Chinese calendar.

Fatty Weng

I came across online in the search of best Oyster Egg in Singapore, and Fatty Weng in Bukit Batok was strongly advocate for their Oyster dish! Besides the yummy ones from Alexandra Village and Boon Lay Food Centre, Fatty Weng marked another acceptable plate of Oysters that is claim one of the better ones from the West!

Fatty Weng
Look at the number of people waiting. Will good stuffs come to those who wait? Just for a simple Oyster dish, I waited for about half an hour before I can ever lend my bites on these.

After the first mouthful, indeed they are the better ones in the market - crispy fried with portion burnt giving out the charred taste. It was fragrant and very flavourful.

Oyster Egg - $4
Eggs and oysters went well with the rich chilli. Though a little on the spicy side, the wait and everything is worthwhile.

Spot the Oyster.

Fried Baby Squid Prawn Mee

Just in Blk 155 of Bukit Batok Street 11 alone there are 2 well known Prawn Mee stalls. Often I get confused which stall sells the best hokkien mee as their reputation has been around since my school days. While some says the Fried Prawn Mee from Yong Xing's Coffeeshop is better while the others say the reverse. Having tried both, I would say that in general they tasted above average and both have their unique selling point.

Fried Baby Squid Prawn Mee

There was a good balance of gravy, with yellow and white noodles well mixed in an acceptable taste of prawn stock. Signature's baby squid was included and fried together with eggs, enhancing the sweet taste of the prawn stalk. On the other hand, the belachan chilli that was tucked at the side of the place had complemented the dish well.

Fried Prawn Mee - $5 (Medium)
One thing I ever notice from the plate was that instead of having baby squid prawn mee like what was mentioned on their signboard, bigger squid / sotong rings were found among the noodles. Anyway that doesn't matter much.

Even though, the plate of Mee doesn't have the WoW factor but overall taste was definitely better than most markets.

Laksania

Finally, I got the chance to visit Laksania.Laksania is a place where you can find different kinds of Laksa from Penang, Kelantan, Sarawak as well as local Singapore Laksa. They aim to have an innovative menu, specializing in local and fusion dishes with Laksa leaves.

Laksania Storefront
Here the table number display advertising their laksa.

Table Number
I had the Iced Lemongrass Tea drink to pair up with my meal as I felt that they are of the best combination, enhancing the taste further.

Iced Lemon Grass Tea - $3.50
Originated from Borneo Island, Sarawak Laksa is a less spicier and less coconut version of our local Laksa. It comes in shredded chicken and prawn broth paired with rice vermicelli. To achieve such soup base, more than 6 hours is needed to boil in order to bring out the full sweetness of the chicken and prawns.

Besides that, ingredients like shredded chicken, sliced prawns, fresh coriander, beansprouts, lime and homemade belachan chili are served on used.

Regular Sarawak Laksa - $4.90
It was my first time trying Sarawak Laksa, it had a special tangy taste added with a little bitterness inbetween but the aftertaste was ok.

Rice Vermicelli / Bee Hoon

Overall, the service is quite attentive and waiting time is very short. This place serve a one stop place for laksa lovers, gathering all laksa dishes together. I dont mind going back to try other kinds of laksa.
