Tan Hock Seng Cooked Food

Tan Hock Seng cooked food is quite popular among my colleagues for its roasted delights and the wide variety of food served.

Tan Hock Seng Cooked Food
Kway Chap Set was delicious with the generous amount of black sauce over the braised eggs, Tau Gua, PIg's Skin, Tau Pok and Intestines. Intestines were well braised and cleaned with no trace of "porky" taste. The surprise lies underneath the thicky sweet braised items whereby we get to have bites of healthy greens. Considering a $3 meal, I would say its a generous portion.

Kway Chap Set - $3
Kway on the other hand was big, smooth and tasty contained in a big bowl of soup.

Kway
The soup from the duck noodles shared the same taste with the soup base from the kway chap, tasty and addictive. While the gravy on the roasted duck too shared the same with what was used over the kway chap.

Roasted Duck Noodle - $3.50

Roasted duck has a significant roasted flavour, tasty and delighting. Overall, I find them better than average.

Tasty Roasted Duck
The cooked food stall is one of the interesting ones i had met, selling many dishes. I will be back again for other food from their stall.

Wheeler's Yard

I have never dined in any of the cafes located in the industrial Estate and just recently, I decided to venture into such areas on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Facade was simple, cemented with dark dirty patches on the bricks, a common outlook of Singapore's warehouses.

To emphasis its trade further, a red bicycle was mount onto one of its corner of the shelter.

Wheeler's Yard
As you know, Wheeler's yard is a bike workshop concept with an incorporation of a cafe.
We followed the arrows leading us to the cafe and saw a neat row of red old retro bicycles lined up along the walkway, leading us into the merchandise.

Red Retro Bicycles
Bike lovers, this should be one of the heavens where you can get to see parade of bikes and peripherals. There are also a wide range of helmets available.

Merchandise

Bikes for the kiddos are on sale too. Do check it out!

Kiddos' Bike
Besides having bicycles in Wheeler's Yard, you can spot the old school vespa parked there.

Another rare sight of the old school barber chairs. However, no resting is allowed on these chairs.

If you are coming from the neighbourhood, there is a side gate to enter into Wheeler's yard.

The back or the other entrance of Wheeler's yard
It was Sunday morning and as I entered into the cafe, I was amazed by the amount of decorations hanging here and there. There were bikes mounted on the tables as well as hanging onto the walls, likewise for those colorful helmets.

Dining Environment
Place was simple without too much of paint work and it was all like dining in a clean workshop.

Back of the dining place
Just at the front table in front of the cafe entrance, we have batman on the wheels. Whee! Most of the tables has a headphone attach, allowing diners to listen to the music.

That's your momentum
A buzzer will be given after ordering at the counter. Once it flashes and vibrates, we have to proceed to the collection counter.

Buzzer
Self service is practised throughout, even its menu, we have to walk up to the counter. Menu was rather simple, printed on rough brown papers and clipped onto the board.

Menu
It was quite innovative to make use of the bike's gear peddle as a door handle for the toilet.

A look at the toilet door handle

Our brunch started with cups of iced beverages, Cappuccino and soursop. Taste was lacking and for soursop, it was disappointing as it was quite diluted without the fleash of the fruits.

Soursop and Iced cappuccino - $5.50, $6
While I heard so many people were raving about this place, I would say their food is average and expensive.

Grilled chicken was one of the recommended mains. It was boneless with hints of cajun spice, paired with sauteed greens and creamy mash.

Grilled Chicken - $17.90
Hum Bao Bao is another recommended dish on its menu, when translated from Mandarin, it actually means hamburger. It consists of double homemade beef patties, stacked with bacons, cheddar cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato and topped with caramelized onions.

Side view of the burger
Buns were pillow soft in the inside and tanned on its crust with black sesame seeds. Though the patties may be juicy but taste was all lacking. Thick cut fries make up part of the dish, however, the oil used give out a smell that hint us that it had been overused.

Hum Bao Bao - $23.90
All in all, I felt that if you want a change in the usual dining experiences, then this would be a good place and chance. However, if you are here for food and have high expectations, then this is gonna be disappointing.

Lian Soon Huat Seafood

Tucked in a little corner of the coffee shop, Lian Soon Huat Seafood plays a majority portion of serving food to most of the tables where I can see number of big families tables gathered over some home cooked dishes and fish head steamboat. Though Bukit Panjang may sounds a little bit distant to me, Im quite surprised to see that place was bustling with human traffic.

Lian Soon Huat Seafood
Authentic Hokkien Mee taste with the used of pork lard. Sinful yet straight to the point keeping the traditional ingredients, Yellow Mee was flat with sticky brown gravy. All was good and scored slightly better than the average.

Hokkien Mee - $7
Crispily fried with the fermented bean paste, this dish was new to me from a Cze Char Stall.
Not only did the presentation had blown me away, its taste was rather special to me. Though it was a little sinful with the belly meat, it was worth some calories I thought.

Nan Ru Fried Meat - $9
Adorn with Singapore's National Flower, it make the dish stands up more with its purple bright colour.

Close up
Hotplate Tofu was decent, came with a few pieces of fried tofu with egg sticking to the base of hotplate. The dish was bubbling hot when served, sweet and tasty to my liking.

Hotplate Tofu - $8

A fragrant pot of 3 cups chicken infused with curry leaves. However it was lacking of the 3 cups wine taste and was too oily. Drum meat were used and the soy taste was not well absorbed into the meat.

3 Cups Chicken - $10
Here's a little up close on the chicken in the scalding hot claypot.

Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House

While waiting for the Dim Sum Restaurant to open, we decided to go for something light to ease our hunger in the morning by visiting Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House which is located few units away from the Dim Sum Place.

Occupying 2 units of space in Sunshine Plaza, I was rather suprise that each unit is actually half pack with diners on a Sunday morning whereby most shops in the plaza has closed for business.

Parklane Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House
We ordered a big plate of fried wantan noodles to share between ourselves. However, the portion when served looked pretty small to me. Perhaps the portion that was being "upsized" was the number of fried Wantan on the plate, as for noodles, its as good as the smaller portion.

Fried wantans are light weighted and crispy, subsequently quite fragrant and complemented the springy noodles well. While Char Siew Meat was a tad fatty.

Fried Yun Tun Wantan Mee - $5 (large)
Soup from the wantan was decent, wantan skin was smooth with reasonable amount of minced meat in it.

Wantan Soup
All in all, I felt that the Wantan Mee is decent and worth trying!

Victor's Kitchen

There used to be snaky queues lining up outside Victor's Kitchen even before its operation hours but during my recent visit , there was a signage placed in front of shop asking diners not to queue up and it was by the building management.

Victor's Kitchen
The internal of Victor's Kitchen is rather run down and cramped with chipboard foreceiling.

Internal
As the tables were all lined up in rows leaving a middle walkway, the dining area were rather cramped if you were to order different kinds of Dim Sum. However such squeezy area gave us a feel on how situation is like in Char Chang Ting of Hong Kong.

Dining Area
Interestingly prepared with a bowl of ice outside the cooling HK Summer Beverages, it did remind us of the authenticity of such fare.

HK Summer Ice Tea - $3 & HK Summer Ice Ying Yang - $3
Chicken Porridge was not too thick and not too watery. Simply love its texture and the sweetness. Also, century egg with chicken meat is delicious.

Phoneix Porridge - $4.50
I'm still in search of the better Siew Mai. Though these are good, but not to die for.

Tasty Queen Size Siew Mai - $4.50
A bite of the "Q" chewiness. These prawns were succulent.

Teo Chew Style Steam Dumpling - $4.50
The XO Carrot cake is so soft till i thought I'm eating some gluely paste until I confirmed that it is their signature carrot cake. This is also one of the shop's recommendation.

XO Scallop, Sausage Carrot Cake with XO Sauce - $4.50
One of the staples that we wont skip during any Dim Sum Meal. The signature dish - Golden Egg Yolk Lava Bun. Even before you bite on it, the fillings will ooze out once you tear away its paper at the bottom. Though oily and creamy, it still tastes good in the overall.

Golden Egg Yolk Lava Bun (3 Pcs Per Set) - $4.50
Sauce is generous on the plate of Char Siew Cheong Fun. Its silky translucent thin layer skin simply wrapped the chopped pieces of char siew meat well.

Char Siew Cheong Fun - $4.50
To enhance some of the Dim Sum taste, it is good to have dab on some chilli.

Chilli

Through this return visit, I felt that Victor's Kitchen had lost its charm somehow, she is no longer my best and economical choice of Dim Sum that will come straight into my mind.

Heng Huat Fried Kway Tiao

Having Fried Kway Tiao in a healthier manner? Well, if you haven't hear of Fried Kway Teow with greens covering up the noodles, this is one of the places where you can find one beside the one in Golden Mile Food Centre.

The unusual practice of the hawker with his whistling blowing method had stunned me when I first saw it. The man will start blowing whistle to alert customers that the Kway Tiao are ready, an alternative way to installing a digital number system.

Heng Huat Fried Kway Tiao
Though it costs $4 per plate, the portion is rather small, not recommended for big eaters. With the healthy greens topped the dish, the Kway Teow can barly be seen. At better times, you get to enjoy the plate of Kway Teow without too much of burnt "chao tah" taste.

One of the down side is that they are using disposable plates and papers in an airy environment, once the plates are left empty, they will be easily blown away by the strong winds from the fan.

Seng Huat Hokkien Mee

I have been eying for Seng Huat's Pig Trotter Bee Hoon for quite sometime but I'm always carried away by this thought especially when I'm so spoil by the selections in Pasir Panjang. Just today, I took effort to remind myself that I must patronise this stall, unfortunately I have learn that Pig Trotter Bee Hoon only available after 5pm. :(

Seng Huat Hokkien Mee
Queue piled up in split seconds after I joined in. There is only 1 wok whereby the lady can only fry one type of dish at a time in batch, thus it doesn't really matter who comes in the queue first at times. If the lady is currently frying Hokkien Mee, it may takes a while if you are ordering Hokkien Mee as the next batch she cooked maybe Fried Bee Hoon, it depends.

Auntie caught in the act!

Seems like I had make a good choice. The first mouthful of the white vermicelli had hit me at the right spot.Though lightly flavored, it eludes a distinct fragrance and sweetness from the egg with a less greasy manner. Moist and tangy with lime juice squeezed over. What's more you will notice some crunchy pork lards in between bites. Nice!

White Bee Hoon - $4
Though advocated for their old style of Hokkien Mee, I must admit that I am not that  into old school afterall. Given the choice, I would prefer ordering their White Bee Hoon instead as it irks me a little with the yellow noodle taste even though moisture consistency was perfect.

Fried Hokkien Mee - $4

With its taste bench-marked on the White Bee Hoon, Im quite confident that the plate of fried pig trotter bee hoon should fit my style. Nevermind for not having the dish today, I will be back soon!
