Immanuel French Kitchen [Closed]

Immanuel French Kitchen is situated at the location where De Burg was previously, exactly at the same spot.  The search for a pocket friendly French Cuisine is something you are looking for if you dont mind a kopitiam environment.

As mentioned in the previous post, the kopitiam is something out of the ordinary and perhaps one that served "atas", restaurant quality standard of food.

Immanuel French Kitchen
Menu was rather simple and straight forward, consisting most essential must have food from the French Cuisine Menu like foie gras, duck confeit etc.

Menu
A look into the kitchen and we get to see Chef Immanual on his job and there are no secrets for its open concept.

In the Kitchen
For our starters under homemade Charcuterie, we had the duck rillette and this was served with gherkin and bread.

Duck Rillette - $8.60
Spread some of the duck rillete on the slice of bread given and enjoy the moist and buttery bites off.

Moving into the mains, we had one of the staples selection in French cuisine, the confit of duck leg. Imported from France served sitting on a bed of smashed potato,  braised cabbage and Au Jus. Simply love its outer layer for its skin is "crackling-ly" good!

French Duck Leg Confit - $15.90
Another starring dish - Braised pork belly in kakuni style served with duxelle mushroom, onsen egg and potato foam. Deliciously plump and yummy!

Pork Belly - $16.90
The last main dish we had was Chicken breast cooked in Sous Vide Technique served with barley risotto and mushroom fricassee. The chicken meat came in a circular shapes which reminds me of those pre-packed Toufu we had from the market.

Sous Vide Chicken Breast - $13.60
The verdict: alot of affordable french cuisines dining were seen popping up in the malls and neighborhood recently. Strategically located to their targeted customers and gradually the idea of relating French Cuisine to "having to spend a bomb" is out of the picture. Enjoying such french cuisine may be deemed affordable and reasonable now.

Though Immanuel French Kitchen is relatively new and had just joined in the "clan", I would say that they are good but not the best in the West.

Two Wings

Good things all comes in pairs! Featuring Two Wings, when one isn't just enough. From their business name, its quite obvious that they are specialized in chicken wings.

Two Wings Menu - One just Isnt Enough (Front)
Two Wings is situated in a neighbourhood coffeeshop where all the western fares are. The coffeeshop is an upgraded version of the conventional ones as its always packed full of people during meals hours and stalls like selling noodles, cze char and even the conventional drinks stall is out of sight. With stalls selling European cuisines like French and German in coffeeshop, it really gave me a surprised as I first entered the place.

Two Wings Menu - One just Isnt Enough (Back)

Two Wings
What's the significant of their wings as compared to most fried chicken outlets is definitely its plump and juicy wings served. These quality wings were sourced from overseas and for achieving such a perfect crisp and succulent taste, they had discovered the right temperature and timing in the fryer, thus also reducing the oiliness in the wings.

Not only that, the first bite was impressive as it was flaky and crispy on its outer layer.

Wings - $7 for 4
Beisdes the origins and skills for preparing such addicting wings, what make Two Wings special is that every order is only prepared at its freshness when ordered, therefore, dont mind waiting a little while.

They were served in a wooden board and came with a "powerful" chicken, closest to a Chicken Rice Chilli. Dipped into their homemade garlic flavoured chilli sauce and enjoy the right punch of spiciness and richness.

What else I would say? Remarkably good! To avoid disappointments, it is best to make a reservation before heading down there.

OMGrill [Closed]

Oh My Grill has been opened recently in late March 2014 in Happy Hawkers. The one who is behind all those cooking is actually the winner of Singapore first ever reality cooking competition, Wokstars (2014).
Stall
The menu showcase a variety of comfort western food with its available main courses and sides. The default main course comes with baside sides, fragrant buttered rice, garden salad and hand cut coleslaw. However if you would like to "upgrade" the sides to Premium sides as indicated in the menu, a top up fee is available at $0.50 per side.

The conventional western menu was made interesting here with added items like Indonesian Chicken Chop, Japanese Chicken Chop and Pan Seared Salmon steak. Such combination marries the traditional flavors of western food with modern ones and I bet it will attract more of us as we learnt that having western is no longer that boring.

Add caption
Their kitchen was spacious and neat. The winner of Wokstars (2014) Ng Kheng Siang (KS)
was present during my visit. He was friendly and approachable, likewise for his girlfriend Jia Ying.

I find it rather cute for them to have their designation printed on their back of the polo tee with "Grilled Inspector" & "Grilled Scientist".

Working Area of OMGrill
Having ordered the original chicken chop for $5.50, I would say its definitely worth what one is paying for. The slab of chicken chop was grilled to perfection with charred lines on its crispy skin and its meat was fully pack of juice! Slurps!

Original Chicken Chop - $5.50
The butter rice came in a pyramid shape unlike the normal round shape from the bowl. Though the butter taste from the rice was not that distinctive, it was fluffy with raisins added among the yellow grains. The coleslaw was chilled and good enough while the garden salad was make up of cherry tomatoes, corn kernels and lettuce.

Butter Rice
I felt that the Japanese chicken chop was an "upgraded" version from the original chicken chop. The only slight differences was that the chicken chop had some mayonnaise squeezed on it with seaweed flakes sprinkled.

Japanese Chicken Chop - $6.50
For those who wishes to make a complete meal, they can top up $1.50 for the soup of the day.

Add on with Soup of the day - $1.50 Top up on Main Course
Overall, I find that the standards were slightly better than average. It seems like I'm being spoilt for choices in Happy Hawkers now for they have so many good food around.

Hwa Jin Vegetarian Family Restaurant 華津素食

Hwa Jin Vegetarian is a family restaurant located in Bukit Gombak within walking distance from the nearest MRT station. Be prepared to be spoilt for choices in Hwa Jin as they do not operate like a conventional vegetarian restaurant.

Aside from the Economical Rice and Bee Hoon they are selling, diners are free to choose from the various kinds of vegetarian dishes in their Cze Char Style with their ala carte menu.

Hwa Jin Vegetarian Family Restaurant
Restaurant is spacious clean and modern looking with speakers and fans mounted. Traditional Chinese decorations and arts were seen hanging at the walls.

Interior
Being a non vegetarian eater, I always find it a joy to explore into such vegetarian cuisine especially when they can offer meat dishes out of our expectation. It usually filled me with surprises how those mock meat can be tasted like real ones.

To start off with our meal, we had their Toufu Seaweed soup. Simple and light in taste but flavourful I would say, consisting of dumplings, mocked pork belly meat, toufu, vegetables and wolfberries were added to achieve a sweeter taste in the soup.

Toufu Seaweed Soup - $5
Best choice for the meal for its sweet and sour mocked chicken bites which brought much crunch to the meal. Slices of lemon were included and I love the crispy fried "chicken".

Lemon Chicken - $8
One of the best vegan Mee Goreng I ever had. It came with hints of curry smell, added with mocked lean meat, fishballs, eggs, vegetables. The dish was make perfect with some tomato sauce and sliced cucumbers tucked at the side of the plate.
Mee Goreng - $4
Hor Fun was pretty average, not much expecatation from such dish. It was quite plain with mushrooms, vegetables and mocked meat. Tasted as good to its namesake, vegetarian Hor Fun!

Hor Fun - $4
With its widespread of dishes available from its menu, its hard for me not to go back again. With its popularity and history among the vegetarians, it's hard for them not to know the existence of Hwa Jin in Bukit Gombak.

Churrosity

Curiosity over Churrosity! I had came across this stall while I was strolling down the streets in Holland Village after my dinner. Having tried Churros in Europe few years back, I had never come across any stall in Singapore selling these bites and since I chanced by this stall, I thought it will be good to give me a 'de ja vu'.

Churrosity
The original / regular Churros comes in a lengthy size but one can opt the mini churros which are served in cups form. Besides having the regular churros coated in cinammon and sugar, we get a free topping of our choice for ordering those mini versions. It comes with 2 sizes, Regular or Large cup at $3.20 and $4.90 respectively.

Toppings include Chocolate, Honey, Strawberry and dulce de leche (caramel).

Chosing Churros
Churros was prepared and taken out from the deep fryer and there were rolled onto the tray with sugar and cinnamon powder. Afterwhich, it was then placed into the cup piece by piece, added with the topping of our choice.

Regular Cup with Caramel Topping - $3.20

I would say it is a English Version of "You Tiao" aka Fried fritters that was much more sweeter. I like its uniqueness in taste and that it is out of the hot oil. Simply a best choice to for a munch while walking around Holland village.

Malaysia Boleh - Klang Bak Kut Teh

Stop by Klang Bak Kut Teh if you are keen on some herbal soup! Sharing the same stall area as the famous claypot rice in Malaysia Boleh., they are easily spotted in the other half of the "food court" area up by a few steps on the stairs.

Klang Bak Kut Teh Stall
Besides the herbal infused pot of soup we had, a BKT meal is never complete without fried fritters aka "you tiao" as well as a bowl of rice. No! A plate of rice since there is no bowl available from their stall.

Bak Kut Teh - $6
The Bak Kut Teh soup was all well boiled in the earthen claypot with its based wrapped with aluminum foil. Never let your fingers or skin get in contact with the pot as it was real hot. To add on, one can still hear the sizzling noise from the boiling water when I had it placed on my table.

Though soup was not thick but it was all filled with herbal infusion. For those who dont take herbs, it may be strong for you. The after taste was a little bit bitter on the tongue.

Hot claypot Bak Kut Teh
The you tiao was not cripsy and neither was it soggy. But it really goes well with the BKT.

You Tiao
I'm not sure it met the Klang style, but if I was to choose the white over the black version of Bak Kut Teh, I will choose the latter. The taste was good but not to die for.

Malaysia Boleh - Penang Road's Famous Chendol

Malaysia Boleh's Penang Road's Famous Chendol has one of the better Chendol in Jurong. Every bowl of chendol cost $2 and is efficiently prepared under the ladies teamwork (one blending the ice and the other topping the bowl up with chendol ingredients)

Penang Road's Famous Chendol

The bowl of dessert was cooling, make up of typical green jelly, coconut milk, gula melaka as well as the starring big red beans! Taste was light but very refreshing to the body system especially after a hot day. The traditional metal spoon was used to get us enjoy such cool dessert at a cooler temperature.

Chendol - $2
Well, with such dessert around, how can I resist it? It's just another bowl off Malaysia Boleh that is worth the calories!
