Wuerstelstand, the Austrian Style

Wuerstelstand? Remember the stall that run by an Ang Mo dressed in Chef Uniform selling sausages along the street at chinatown? I bet many had seen the stall while doing CNY shopping and enjoying Mid-Autumn Festival all these years. In fact Wuerstelstand had actually moved into the coffeeshop located nearby the stall.

"The last Sausage Kiosk before the Equator", I bet that this eye catching sentence had drawn lots of curiosity from whoever who passed by and read it. Enjoy the open air dining of authetic Austrian and German Sausage without stepping into any restaurant paying exorbitant pricing.

Outdoor Dining
Although it was located in a local coffeeshop, Chef Erich had decorated his space beautifully and filled of festive mood. It just reminded me of the 12 days of Christmas I had over in Europe last year. A total facelift of the typical Singaporean Coffeeshop stalls.

Festive Mood

His working space, his kitchen was neatly arrange and looked very equipped.

Working Space

Having bought the bratwurst (sausage) and compared to those I had in Germany and Austria this year. I will highly recommend this place if you are game for sausage especially when the price is so attractive. I'm kind of hooked to sauerkraut paired with sausage as well as mustard, chilli and ketchup. They were simply a good reminisce of my Europe Trip.

Ye Ri Xiang Xiao Chi

We had been searching the whole hawker centre for rojak as we saw many of the Hawker tables had a plate of Rojak during dinner time and finally we found Ye Ri Xiang. The stall of Ye Ri Xiang is selling local delights like Char Kway Teow, Carrot Cake and Rojak.

Having ordered its medium portion with additional century egg, it was quite unusual to see that it was served with toothpick instead of the usual satay sticks, which had somehow revealed that they were different from normal rojak stall.

The stall put more focus on their peanuts rather than the prawn paste. The intensity of prawn paste mixed in the Rojak was lesser and instead, taken over by the fragrance of the peanuts. The taste of the paste was sweet with every items on the plate evenly coated with the chopped peanuts. The amount of paste was so precise that there were not many left over accumulated at the base of plate after eating.

Xiao Long Bao

If you are looking for some pocket saving XLB (Xiao Long Bao) for a meal without having to pay the exorbitant price in a normal chinese restaurant, this is definitely for you.

Though there were many delicious food to choose from the Old School Beauty World Roof Top Hawker Centre, these Baos are something that you cannot miss. Comes in a tray of 5 at a cost of $0.70 per Tang Bao

Though its translucent skin may not be done with the well known 18 folds, it was still delicate done with a pleat on its top. Most importantly, the kick of having the "Tang" (Stock) oozing out at high pressure once we sink out teeth in.

10 XLB - $7

It wasnt the typical Suan La Tang I had though the typical ingredients like toufu, black fungus, bamboo shoots, chopped mushroom was used. The soup was packed full of Jin Zhen aka "Golden Needles" (Hemerocallis fulva, a kind daylilies used in vegetarian food) which was abit overdone even with the soury taste from the vinegar and the spiciness from the chilli.

Hot and Sour soup 酸辣汤 - $2.80

Jia Jia Shu Shi

Jia Jia Shu Shi business focus on two kind of local dishes which is Hokkien Mee and Fried Kway Teow. Located at the 4th level of Beauty World Centre, roof top hawker centre, one would had guessed what's their specialty by a glance at the stall's stacked of egg without reading the words hanging. A typical looking Fried Kway Teow stall it is.

Jia Jia Shu Shi

Hokkien Mee was rather sweet with 3 kinds of noodles add in, the round yellow noodle which made up of a marjority portion followed by the thick bee hoon then the fine strings of bee hoon. They had maintained the old school standard of the delicacy with thin cut pork belly with the red hot looking chilli and lime by the side to add on the taste.

Hokkien Mee - $4
It was wet enough and sweetness was enhanced by the eggs added. Although traditional, the plate of Hokkien Mee was lacking in prawn stock. Else it would fare 4 / 5 in its rating.

Fan Xiang Western Food

The old school shopping plaza did not disappoint with numerous hawker stalls still opening on a Saturday Evening. I remember it was about many years back that I had Fan Xiang Western Food which was during my Secondary School Times where the place is still quite popular.

Fan Xiang Western Food

Oh how I missed the glossy looking fried little bun on a plate of chicken chop. Everything looked so old school. Such combination of western food can hardly be found in Singapore nowadays. Chicken chop was well fried and meat was quite tender. The delicious slab of chicken was accompanied with the usual sides like baked beans, coleslaw and fries. All was good just that the fries looked tad too oily for me where the original yellow colors looked dull.

Top 1 Homemade Noodle

After tasted the popular Home Made Noodle in Jurong West, I'm still searching around for the best. Some told me Qiu Lian Ban Mee but they were not my cup of tea. I chanced upon Top 1 Home Made Noodle during a Saturday evening at Beauty World Centre. She was tucked at one corner of the old school roof top Hawker Centre, a prominent location which cant be missed.

Top 1 Home Made Noodle
The home made noodle was soft but seemed over cooked, a bit too soft. Topped with minced meat, sliced fish, mushroom, vegetable and fried anchovies, the broth is delightful and remarkably flavorful.

You Mian - $4
Needless to say, this homemade noodle place is recommended!

Lai Kee Poa Tin

The 2nd consecutive day of Dim Sum crave had led us to Lai Kee Poa Tin in Bukit Batok Street 21, which is just nearby Bukit Batok Swimming complex. I came to know of this stall from one of my secondary school classmates and she had actually recommended.

Located at the corner of the coffee shop just right after the flights of stairs from the carpark, Lai Kee is easily caught sight by anyone especially when the Dim Sum lady keeps recommending her customers on each type of Dim Sum they have in her Malaysian accent. The queue was long but with her quick nature,it makes waiting more bearable somehow.

Lai Kee Poa Tin
It kind of shocked me as I see a number of rare items which I thought can never be found from a Dim Sum stall in coffeeshop. Perhaps Lai kee has a central kitchen where food were already well prepared before hand and was only steamed fresh at their shops upon ordering. These were our breakfast on a Sunday Morning for 2 pax.

Breakfast for 2

I like the century egg porridge with lean meat and cut fried You Tiao (Fried Fritters). It was a little watery on its top layer but with the You Tiao and garnishing, it makes the bowl of porridge rather appetizing especially when it shares a nice scent.

Century Egg Porridge - $2

Highly recommended by the lady server, it seemed like one will regret if he/she missed out their Liu Sha Bao. Comes 4 in a tray,  this white little Bao were more than what I had expected. Even a gentle bite have the "Liu Sha" burst out of them staining my hands. What a pleasant surprise!

Liu Sha Bao - $3.50 (4 pcs)

The Chee Cheong Fun looked good. At the first look, if it wasnt all white, one would have thought it was actually the pig's intestine, it does really look like one isnt it?

The fine and smooth translucent Chee Cheong Fun had shrimps wrapped within was generously drenched with soy sauce, onion oil and spring onion, a plate packed full of fragrant.

Shrimp Chee Cheong Fun - $2.50

Luo Mai Kai (Glutinous Rice) was filled with delicious braised meat combined with the sticky glutionous rice with hints of peppery taste.

Glutinous Rice - $1.70

Strong infusion of herbal taste on the plate of chicken feet, this tray was rather spicy with chilli oil. As a chicken feet lover, I find that the herb scent was a bit too much.

Chicken Feet - $1.80

Har Kau was pretty much standard and commonly ordered.

Often when we see "Har Kao" (Shrimp Dumplings), we will always relate it to Siew Mai. Har Kao Siew Mai are just the standard fare of Dim Sum. Their basic meat fillings were well marinated and was good.

Siew Mai
Looks like a siew mai replica but its comes in green. The butt of the delicate dim sum is bigger in size as it was filled with scallop stacked with minced meat fillings.

Ta da! This is the cross section of Scallop with Siew Mai, can you spot the 3 layers?

The stuff beancurd was one of the Dim Sum that is seldom seen in Dim Sum stalls. Tasty and soft to munch on.

Stuff Beancurd - $1.30

Char Siew Bao is also one of the common item that will be picked in our Dim Sum spread. So to say, after having tried so many Char Siew Baos, Lai Kee fare is above standard. The Char Siew Fillings were moist and tasty.

Char Siew Bao - $0.80 Each
Take their pricing as a benchmark where each tray cost about $1.30 to $2.00. When Dim Sum in Malls and restaurants get ridiculously expensive, seeking such pocket friendly Dim Sum shops is definitely a good choice lessen out those comforting ambiance we had in a elegant and well furbished restaurant, the additional charges from peanuts, napkins and service charges etc.
