Hotplate - Cantine

Hotplate is located at the newly renovated place, canteen in Jurong Point Shopping Mall. Hotaplate is one of the stalls that was seen with queues during most of the dining timing.

Hotplate - Cantine
Tofu Hotplate was indicated as their must try dishes out of the available choices. Price was pretty reasonable at the cost of $5 and comes with rice and a bowl of soup. The rice was served in a small plate instead of a bowl and was rather sticky while the soup was light with cabbages giving a sweet flavor.

Hotplate Toufu Set - $5
In case you may be wondering why most Zhi Char Stall Toufu  Hotplate cost at least $8, what they offer here was the very basic without peas, prawns, chicken or even cashew nuts. The sizzling sound from the hotplate only lasts a few moment, by the time when I carried the dish to the table it had already stopped.

With a thin layer of egg as the base on the hotplate, the dish was filled with a handful of toufu with chopped carrots, onions, mushrooms as well as celery.

The flavoursome sweet brown gravy goes very well with the plain white rice, though simple, the meal itself was quite enjoyable.

Hoon Chit Cooked Food (Closed)

When it was my turn in the queue, I told the auntie that I would like to have a bowl of Lor Mee and everyone started turning their heads to look at me. At that instance I thought I had said something wrongly. Before I could even react, the auntie told me that Fried Kway Teow is the only food available. Without much hesitation, I took the alternative to order a small plate of Fried Kway Teow since I'm already in queue.

Hoon Chit Cooked Food
I waited patiently by the side of the stall hearing the "clanging" noises made by the man who had his full attention in frying the Kway Teow.

The stall was spacious and airy with a fan constantly blowing away the smoke produced during frying.

Throw away the thought of sinful food for that moment and enjoy the plate of mouth watering Fried Kway Teow that was fried in the presence of fragrance pork lards. Also, not forgetting the blood cockles that was added to bring out the flavour of the dish. Altogether with the awesome portion of egg and sweet sauce that explained why it had drew the crowd during lunch time.

Fried Kway Teow - $2.50 (Small)

Craving for such slippery and savoury kway teow? Do head down and try if you can.

Hup Kee Fried Oyster Omelette

Hup Kee Fried Oyster Omelette is located at one of the stalls in the inner circle of Newton Food Centre among the BBQ stalls specialising in Fried Oyster.

Hup Kee Fried Oyster Omelette Stall

Hup Kee's Fried Oyster was more towards the dryer version thus not overly starchy. The portions of starch and egg came in good ratio and was rather crispy. Simply love the creamy big oysters with simple coriander as the garnishing. Picking up these fresh oysters were abit tricky with the pair of chopsticks as they were quite wobbly. For extra ohmmm, do remember to dip them into the sourish chilli.

Fried Oyster - $8 (Big)
In Summary, it was a daring choice to try out its biggest portion of oysters without any recommendations. For those who wants to order oyster and not sure which stall to order from, Hup Kee is definitely a good choice.

Bee Heng Satay

Pork Satay was the main reason why we had chosen Bee Heng's Satay among all other stalls and just right Bee Heng was located nearby to where we were dining.

Stall of Bee Heng
Order 5 sticks of Pork, 5 Muttons and 5 Chicken Satay with Ketupat which cost $9.60 altogether. Served in all disposable plates and bowls with cut cucumber added.

Pork, Mutton and Chicken Satay with ketupat - $0.60 each

Stay away from the piece of pork lard that is skewered alternatively with the meat if you are health conscious. Each of the skewered meat has a combination of smoky flavour and tender meat coupled with 2 bowls of satay dipping sauce. For the mutton, if you are worry of the nature smell of the mutton, it was not so distinctive than I had thought. Overall, the quality and taste was quite consistent throughout.

Satays
The ketupat (Rice Cake) was well-made, soften and goes well with the satay sauce. It's a stomach filler if you are skipping your main course.

Ketupat
The satay was run-of-the-mill. Size of Satay had shrunken a lot these years with price increasing due to inflation. Still missing the good old times where the size was 2 times bigger than what we have now.

TKR

TKR is one of the chicken wings stall recommended by one of the application on my handphone. Noted for its crispy skin and charred exterior, these yummy chicken wings are not to be missed. When competition is very stiff in Newton Food Centre, it's hard to survive by just selling an item, thus TKR had its business expanded to items like Otah and Satay.

Stall of TKR
The usual hawkers would have written the ordering details on the disposable plates given and like wise, TKR did the same with quantity and table number indicated on the plate. These tempting plate of wings were juicy, for tangy flavour, squeeze some lime over them and for additional kick, dip portions of the meat into the spicy chilli given.

BBQ Chicken Wings - $1.30 / pcs

Yummy not? These succulent and delightful BBQ finger licking good wings were pretty well done. Serviettes were given by the uncle and he was thoughtful enough to tell me not to place them on table as the fans would blow them off.

Close up of Chicken Wings

At a price of $1.30 per piece, they are reasonable considering its location even though neighbourhood food centres are selling them at about $1.10 - $1.20 per piece. Last but not least do try TKR out for their yummy wings, if not their friendly service. :)

Bangkok Express

Bangkok Express is the only Thai Cuisine Stall available in Newton Food Centre which sells authentic Thai Cuisine and all dishes contain no pork or lard. Spoilt by the available choices, it was quite hard to make a decision for my dinner.

The stall is manned by a Thai lady and a man, comes to think of that, its a minority to see Thai hawkers in Singapore.

Bangkok Express
I had finally made a choice and gave Fried Seafood Vermicelli a try. It comes with a bowl of clear tom yum soup and the plate of fried vermicelli which was loaded with ingredients like, prawns, beansprouts, sotongs, eggs, carrots and vegetables.

Fried Seafood Vermicelli - $5

Serving was big where the moist level of the Tang Hoon (Vermicelli) was in good proportion. Even if one feels too dry, help yourself with a spoonful of the Tom Yum Soup, the sweet and sour nature with the additional spice would actually make dining more lively.

Close up of Seafood Vermicelli
In my opinion, the Tang Hoon was a little bland, additional sauce taste could have make it more palatable.Nevertheless, it still tastes better than most of the Zhi Char Stall in Singapore.

Xin Sheng Gor Hiong Prawn Cracker

Having won numerous awards from local food programs as well as Makansutra over the years, Xin Sheng Wu Xiang Xia Bing is one of the so called popular stalls in Taman Jurong Market and Food Centre. Located at the 3rd level, the stall is quite prominent as they are located at a corner near to the escalators.

Xin Sheng Gor Hiong Prawn Cracker

We had bee hoon together with the selection of Gor Hiong as dinner. It was warm and soft, quite tasty though they were very plain with beansprouts as the only ingredients.

Fried Bee Hoon
As a century eggs lover, I cant help it but I had to order them. Surprisingly, they were out of my expectation. Besides its cooling outer layer and the preserved ginger stripes, the yolk came in creamy orange color, unlike the usual ones in boring grey color.

Selection of Wu Xiang with Chilli Sauce
Preparation of the dish was rather efficient whereby our food was served less than 5 minutes after ordering. The deep fried stuffs were served in the grease paper to absorb the oil with the thin crispy fragile prawn cracker still maintaining its shape even though it was put into the oil once more.

For additional kick, it is recommendable to dip all the fried stuff into the bowl of concocted chilli sauce given. I bet you will feel "shiok" as I were.

Cost of meal: $15 for 2 pax (Based on the above items)
