小龙坎 Xiao Long Kan Hotpot (Westgate)

I probably wouldn’t have chosen to visit Shoo Loong Kan Hotpot if it weren’t for my friend’s suggestion, as both the name and its elaborate furnishings felt a bit overwhelming to me. Nonetheless, my friend recommended we meet at their Westgate branch, so I decided to give it a try.

The restaurant featured modern furnishings infused with traditional elements, with the dragon prominently symbolizing their brand. Upon entering, we were greeted by two traditional chairs set against a dragon-themed backdrop, along with a decorative dragon centrepiece on the table between the chairs.

Furnishings

The red and yellow theme felt a bit too bold for my taste. Each seating area in the restaurant was simple, with chairs topped with cushioned red PVC upholstery, adding to the vibrant colour scheme.

Furnishings

It seems that chain hotpot restaurants are setting a high standard for service, with staff being patient and welcoming. Perhaps it's because patrons like myself have come to benchmark service expectations based on the big players like HDL.

The server assisting our table was quite professional, clearly explaining the flow of the meal. She even prepared a special concoction of the restaurant's signature condiments for each of us, perfect for dipping into the hotpot during the meal.

Signature Sauce

The server highly recommended the seasonal vegetables, noting that they were available only at that time and were particularly popular among people from a certain part of China. However, after blanching and trying them, we didn’t find the flavor to our liking.

Seasonal Vegetables

∂We opted for a trio of hotpot bases: the spiciest Mala, a savoury Tomato Soup base, and a rich Pork Bone Soup. Each offered a unique flavour experience to complement our hotpot ingredients.

The name “Ben Chi Guo,” translated as Benz Hotpot, instantly catches attention with its nod to the iconic car brand. This trio-flavored hotpot not only impresses with its name but also features the brand’s symbol as part of its presentation, adding a touch of luxury and visual appeal. It’s a creative detail that transforms the hotpot from a simple meal into a memorable dining experience.

Triple Flavour 奔驰锅

The sliced prime beef was elegantly rolled and served in a visually appealing presentation.

The server also highly recommended the plate of fish slices. However, once cooked, the texture didn’t quite suit our preferences—it felt like smooth, chewy bands. To be honest, I still prefer the more familiar, common fish slices we typically have in Singapore.

Overall, I still prefer the usual hotpot places we’ve visited. Perhaps the style and vibe of Shoo Long Kan Hotpot didn’t suit me.
