Two Chefs Eating Place

Recently I had read an article about the Top Zi Char Places in the west and Two Chefs Eating Place was listed. Having published on the strait times in previous years had also contributed some fame to this eating place.

Two Chefs Eating Place

Located next to commonwealth Food Centre and in the middle of the Commonwealth Neighbourhood Estate, it seems like their die hard fans will just join the queue no matter how long it is even during on a Friday evening. The sitting place was somehow a little unusual to me as we are dying at low lying area where the level of my table was equivalent to the level of the road. It was rare to dine in such environment anymore I thought. There were ample of parking lots, thus drivers need not have to worry.

Queues of Two Chefs Eating Place

As my visit falls within the Chinese New Year Season, the given menu was rather compact with few items under each categories and we had the menu turned over, it shows the set meal for large table dining.

Menu

We were told to place the order before getting our table. We were at an advantage as we were only dining as a pair and smaller tables were readily available.

Environment
The dishes came pretty fast in consistent mode. The first that came to our table was the sliced fish with ginger and spring onion.

Fried Sliced Fish with Ginger & Spring Onion - $10

It's kind of disappointing when we received the dried scallop bean-curd dish. Shreds of scallops can be found in the sauce but was given sparingly. The Toufu was nothing unusual but more towards those prepacked ones from the supermarkets. To make things worse, the green peas that were given tasted extremely raw as though it was uncooked. Though crunchy but it filled the mouth packed full of raw greens taste.

Dried Scallop Beancurd - $10 (Small)

Nothing beats this old school plate of braised Yee Mee. It was flavourful especially with the rich black gravy that coated each strands of the Yee Mee with consistency. If you like KL Hokkien Mee, the taste was pretty close to one. I bet this plate of noodles will beat any neighbourhood Zi Char Stall hands down.
Yee Mee - $4 (Small)

The visit of Two Chefs is never complete without having their Butter Ribs. These sweet fried pork ribs were all covered with milk powder dusts and such concoction had complimented the dish quite well. It's unique and a definite must try.

Butter Ribs - $10 (Small)

I felt that Two Chefs Eating place is over-hyped. Their dishes were pretty average except the Butter Ribs that had given me the Wow Factor. But on the contrary, they are doing well by the look of the snaky queues line up at the 2nd image. Perhaps their style doesn't seems to fit my bill.

Yuan Xing Pai Gu Da Xia Mian

New stall spotted at Boon Lay Market and village selling Prawn mee as the main dish.

Yuan Ling Pai Gu Da Xia Mian Stall.

Though the combination of pork ribs together with prawns noodle was not listed on the menu. We managed to order it. The prawn stock was sweet and tasty but somehow I find them quite oily perhaps due to the additional fried onions placed in. Kang gong and beansprouts were also included to the bowl of noodle soup.

Pork Ribs and prawns noodle soup - $5.50
Ribs given were a handful but not that meaty as I thought. However the prawns were quite fat and juicy.

Ribs
Here's another piece of the given pork ribs.

Prawn Mee Soup

Overall, i think their prawn mee tastes of the average and does not have the WoW factor upon eating.

Western - Cantine

Cantine, located in the basement of Jurong Point serves Halal food and if you are craving for some fried stuff, you can try visiting the Western Stall located at the far end of the food court. Cantine is part of the Kopitiam Group and patrons can use their Kopitiam card to enjoy some discounts off the regular price of their meal.

Western Stall in Cantine, Jurong Point
Besides having menu hanging on its wall, it was also placed on the ordering counter, laminated with a thin plastic flim with meal starting as low as $7 (without using Kopitiam card).

Menu
Fillet was fried to golden brown in perfection with crisp and a little crumbs on its exterior to be paired with the little portion of tartar sauce given. Out of all, only the piece of fillet was fried upon ordering while the fries were already fried and prepared before hand. Cabbages as its side were fresh together with salad sauce.

Japanese Fast Food

Beside the famous Ah Guan Mee Pok in the coffeeshop, another stall that worth one's try is the Japanese cuisine located next to Ah Guan. The one who handles the cooking had a band on its head which make him look like any other Authentic Japanese Chef in the kitchen.

The young lady who handles the order was soft spoken and had a different kind of accent through her english conversation.

Japanese Fast Food

After ordering our food, we were given a number plate to wait for the food to be served.

Diners can help themself with miso soup by scooping them from the pot on the stall's counter.

Miso Soup
Chosen Oyako Don for its a healthier choice with the pyramid logo indicated on its menu consisting of 500kcal. Diners can be worries free as Japanese Fast Food uses healthier salt and healthier oil.

The rice was generously given as well as its ingredients like pickles, chicken and egg for the bowl of Oyako don. It was really value for money I thought as such bowl could easily cost us $5 - $6 from the food court. Chicken was well cooked with Japanese flavorings in it. All was good except that the rice was too wet for me and lumps of it can be found in the bowl.
Oyako Don - $4.50
On a side note, I noticed that they have some Japanese patrons as well which somehow tells me that this stall is definitely worth a visit. Since there were a number of dishes and sides available, I will like to give others a try during my next visit.

Canton Paradise

Canton Paradise is part of the Paradise Group and they served a wide spread of Cantonese as well as Hong Kong Cuisine from Dim Sum to Roasted Meat.

As we walked pass the walkways in front of Canton Paradise, their attractive purple lightings as well as the grand Interior design were somewhat welcoming. On top of that, the beautifully roasted meat were hanged at its kitchen seen through the transparent glass panels. They looked succulent and delicious which I can't bear to take my eyes off them.

Canton Paradise

Even the cover page of its menu fits the restaurant theme color, purple.
Menu

Not forgetting its utensils which was neatly placed on every tables to welcome the arrival of the next diners.

Utensils set
It's always excite me to see combination congee from a Cantonese restaurant as I can give the best a try at one shot. The congee was smooth and not gooey with a combination of century eggs, mixed pork and fried fritters, a perfect stomach warmer and light meal for the night.

Combination Congee (3 Varieties) - $8.80

The outlook of crispy BBQ Honey Pork Buns were a reminiscent of undercooked batter due to its uninteresting pale colors but do not judge its look by the cover, they were indeed very crispy on the outside, abit powdery as well as flaky.

Crispy BBQ Honey Pork Buns (3 Pcs) - $4.80
The hot and sweet inner fillings should buy one over. I would definite recommend this if you are a Char Siew Bao Lover.

Fillings of the Honey Pork Buns
The Steamed shanghai pork dumplings didnt score well. They were lacking of taste and the skin of those dumplings was thicker than expected. I believe that the ones in the nearby coffeeshop is doing better than this.

Steamed Shanghai Pork Dumplings - $4.80
The fat juicy meat from the duck is a staple of Hong Kong Roasted meat.  It's crackling skin that filled us with the roast aroma was heavenly accompanied by the springly thin noodles and sweet black sauce. 2 big fat stalks of greens had given a good touch in the color presentation. Customers may choose to have the soup version at $7.30.

Crispy Roast Duck Noodle (Dry) - $7.80
The steamed custard Bun was "so-so", lacking the burst of flavors.
Steamed Custard Bun (3 Pcs) - $5.20

In Summary, I find that they did fairly better in their Cantonese meals than Dim Sum. The dim sum they served were just on the average as compared to its other member in the Paradise Group.

Yong Kee Famous Fish Ball Noodle

Frankly speaking, fish ball noodle had never been in my mind for any meals unless I run out of ideas of what to eat. And just over dinner, my colleague strongly avocate that we "die die" have to try this famous fish ball noodle despite that each of us was already packed with our main dishes for dinner.

Yong Kee Famous Fish Ball Noodle

After trying the noodles, I finally realize what his rave was all about through the whole of our dinner. Mee Kia used was different and whiter in color and did not have any scent of the "ki" and of course its noodle was "Q" and tasty especially with the old school kind of chilli used together with the used of vinegar. Not only that, these fresh balls were extremely soft and bouncy. I was told that they were freshly made by Yong Kee. If you asked if they were worth the while to queue, my reply is a definite yes to you.

Mee Kia Dry - $3

Tom Yum Goong

I have revisited Tom Yum Goong with a group of colleagues this round and for more! Each one of us had ourselves a plate of yellow pineapple rice to replace our usual white rice. The pineapple rice was fragrant with visible pineapple chunks, prawns, corn kernels and peas topped with chicken floss.

5 plates of Pineapple Rice
Opted the red version of tom yum soup and it wasnt spicy as I thought. Most importantly, it came in a steamboat poat over the burning fire which I thought was rather interesting.

Seafood Tom Yum Soup (Red) for 5 person

Soup was appetizing with its sour and tangy taste. Ingredients like seafood given was proportionally given and each bowl was almost filled to its brim.

Portion of Tom Yum Soup
A good texture from the brinja and the minced meat cooked in the aromatic and herb taste of basil leaves added with a little spice from the sliced chilli.

Brinja with minced meat
Available on the menu at 4 for $6, when learned that we were dining as 5 pax, the lady offered 6 pieces at $9. The sweet marinated chicken were wrapped skillfully by the fray pandan leaves. For more taste, dipped the meat into the sweet and sour chilli given.

6 Pieces of Pandan Chicken - $9

Fluffy egg, it is! The yellow brown appearance of the egg serves a very good dish to go along with plain white rice and also our plates of fragrant pineapple rice.

Egg
I like the sotong the most as the sotong were very fresh. They were soft and chewy which I thought was hard to come by. The dish was also very appetizing with its spice and use of green pepper, chilli and onion.

Squid
Service was good. Compared its food to one of the Thai restaurant nearby, they may not be as good but I would say they are definitely worth the money if you are looking for some pocket saving thai cuisine. Skip the service charges and the air conditioned environment, I couldn't find anyone closer like this in Pasir Panjang area. If you do have any in mind, do let me know.

Total cost for 5 pax: $58.50
