Dong Nan Wanton Mee at Shunfu Hawker Centre | Traditional Wanton Mee in Singapore

While exploring the Upper Thomson area over the weekend, I was recommended to check out Shunfu Hawker Centre for breakfast. Always up for discovering local hawker gems, I decided to make a stop there to see what the food scene had to offer.

After browsing through the food options and making two rounds around the hawker centre, I eventually settled on Wanton Mee (WTM).

Dong Nan Wanton Mee caught my attention, especially with a queue forming in front of the stall. It seemed to be a popular choice among diners, with some familiar faces appearing to be regular customers. Interestingly, I noticed that some customers seemed to know the ordering routine and could place their orders directly without joining the queue.

That certainly made me curious about what makes this stall a favourite among its regulars. With that, it was time to find out what Dong Nan Wanton Mee had to offer!

I ordered the small serving of Wanton Mee, which came with yellow noodles, char siew, greens and pickled green chillies. The char siew had slightly charred edges, while the noodle seasoning tasted rather familiar and ordinary. Presentation-wise, it was pretty straightforward, although there were some flour marks on the plate. A bowl of wanton soup was served on the side.

The wantons were pretty standard in flavour, with a reasonable balance between the wrapper and filling. Nothing particularly outstanding but the portion of filling inside each wanton was decent. They came in a light soup with chopped spring onions.

The char siew came in several slices, with slightly charred and caramelised edges. It was on the leaner side, with a nice roasted appearance, though I would have preferred a little more fatty meat for extra richness.

Dong Nan Wanton Mee at Shunfu Hawker Centre offers a fairly straightforward bowl of traditional wanton mee. The char siew was the more noticeable component, with its lightly charred and caramelised edges, while the noodles and wantons were rather ordinary in flavour. It was a decent breakfast stop during my weekend exploration of Upper Thomson, though it did not leave a particularly strong impression. Perhaps it is a familiar taste that keeps its regular customers coming back.
